After a conversation on the topic of foldable bikes a few years ago with @stephanetavera, I was convinced to try one. Today, I finally rode a Brompton 6-speed, and I’m really impressed! A very comfortable bike that rides about as well as my current city bike, but fits overhead on a train or plane is quite a compelling offer…
@stephanetavera O no! Now I’m fascinated with this foldable gravel bike…
Okay, they've got me when this new model comes out in the spring...
@jack
Give it a try and compare ! What convinced me for Brompton is that the design has been perfected for about 40 years. Every detail is well thought. It's a pleasure to drive, (un)folds in 10 seconds, it's beautiful, and so on.
Some limitations: the brakes under rain are weak, the parts are Brompton specific (maintenance). Price is high, but value for money over the years is terrific.
And think Lindy effect for the future...
@stephanetavera The Brompton seems like an excellent city bike that I can carry on to transport. The All-Packa is a gravel bike I can take with me on a train, plane, kayak, pack mule, &c, to get to interesting destinations for bikepacking.
@jack Can you rent each option for some days?
@stephanetavera What I’m trying to say is that they are different tools for different purposes, so they are not strictly in competition with one another.
@jack @stephanetavera oh my goodness
