Someone sent me this close translation from #Polish to let me feel the difference in affect between the Poles' encyclopaedia on the animal thel call a popielica szara (ashen she-critter) and the English counterpart, who calls it the "European edible [???] doormouse:"

Polish:

> It is a large rodent, similar in size to a rat. If you get a chance to look closely, there's no mistaking it for any other animal. The fursie on its back is gray (ash-colored), and on its belly is light (white or gray-white). In older individuals, the back may have a reddish hue. The border between the back and belly is distinct. The ears are large and clearly visible (protruding strongly from the fursie), gray-pigmented on the outside and flesh-colored on the inside. The eyes are large and dark. The tail is fluffy and gray-colored.

English:

> The European edible dormouse is the largest of all extant dormice, being around 14 to 19 cm (5.5 to 7.5 in) in head-body length, plus an 11- to 13-cm-long tail. It normally weighs from 120 to 150 g (4.2 to 5.3 oz), but may almost double in weight immediately prior to hibernation. It has a generally squirrel-like body, with small ears, short legs, and large feet. Polish:

> While feeding, gray dormice produce very distinctive calls. They resemble throaty grunts or [piggy] squeaks, sounding like "kriii" or "uiii," and lasting about 1-2 seconds. These calls emerge from the treetops and are unmistakable for the calls of other animal species. Their vocal activity peaks in the second half of August, but in areas of high densities, they are active throughout the summer. In years when food is scarce, their vocal activity drops to zero.
