MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History September 15, 1923: Osugi Sakae and his partner Noe Itō, both anarchists and feminists, were murdered by the Japanese military, during the 3-week long Kantō Massacre. They also murdered Osugi’s six-year-old nephew, who had dual US-Japanese citizenship. Over the course of the massacre, Japanese authorities slaughtered over 6,000-9,000 ethnic Koreans, along with Japanese political dissidents. The massacre began on September 1, 1923, the same day as the Great Kanto Earthquake, a magnitude 7.8-8.2 temblor that killed up to 140,000 people and destroyed much of Tokyo, Yokohama and Chiba. The massacre began as a pogrom against Korean immigrants who worked in the Kanto region. Korean labor unions had organized a very effective food relief program to serve quake victims. The police considered them a den of socialists. Many were members of the Korean Independence movement and had been organizing to end Japanese colonial rule. On September 2, police began spreading false rumors that Koreans had been seen carrying gasoline cans in preparation for burning down Japanese neighborhoods, and that Koreans were raping Japanese women. In Yokohama, Kanagawa and Tokyo, police gave residents permission to kill Koreans. The police even formed their own vigilante gangs in some towns. The police and army also used the ongoing violence as justification and cover as they slaughtered union leaders, communists and anarchists. The great film maker, Akira Kurosawa, who was a child at the time, was horrified by the event. “With my own eyes I saw a mob of adults … chasing a bearded man, thinking someone with so much facial hair could not be Japanese....Simply because my father had a full beard, he was surrounded by a mob carrying clubs.”</p><p>The massacre is still denied to this day by many mainstream politicians. As recently as August 30, 2023, just before the 100th anniversary of the massacre, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said that the government believed there was no adequate evidence that the massacre occurred. In 2017, the Cabinet Office removed historical evidence and acknowledgement of the massacre from their website. In 2022, Tokyo mayor Yuriko Koike refused to send a commemorative message for the sixth year in a row. She has argued that the occurrence of a massacre was a matter of historical debate. In July 2020, Koike was re-elected as mayor of Tokyo in a landslide victory. Annual events to commemorate the massacre are regularly met with counterprotests, sometimes violent.</p><p>Novelist Ushio Fukazawa, a Zainichi Koreans (Korean nationals living in Japan, prior to World War Two, and their descendants), wrote about the massacre in the 2015 novel “Green and Red.” There have also been several plays written about the massacre, translated into Esperanto. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History September 6, 1955: Istanbul launched a government-sponsored pogrom against its Greek minorities, but also attacked Jewish and Armenian residents. Dozens were killed in the ensuing riots. Hundreds of women and boys were raped. Over 1,000 were injured. Damage was estimated at $500 million (equivalent to $5.9 billion in today’s dollars). It came in response to the bombing of the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece. The consulate was formerly the house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was the founding father of the modern Republic of Turkey. The bomb had actually been planted by a Turk, but the Turkish authorities suppressed this information and promoted the lie that it was done by Greeks. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History August 22, 1614: The Fettmilch Rising occurred in Frankfurt, a pogrom by artisans against the Jews. Vincenz Fettmilch led the riot through the Judengasse (Jewish Ghetto), attacking and looting their properties and expelling the Jews from the city. The Frankfurt Judengasse was one of the earliest and largest ghettos in Germany. The pogrom was a classic case of dividing the lower classes and pitting them against each other. The guilds wanted more political power and a reduction in grain prices, which they blamed on the money-lenders in the ghetto. The Town Council had reached an agreement with Fettmilch, granting the guilds increased power and rights. However, when the public learned about the city’s extensive debts, Fettmilch deposed the Council and seized the city gates. The emperor demanded a reinstatement of the Town Council and threatened anyone who opposed him with an Imperial Interdiction. The rebellious craftsmen took to the streets, directing its anger against the weakest member of the dispute, the Jews. All inhabitants were driven into the Jewish Cemetery, while the mob plundered their homes. Next month, the emperor arrested and executed Fettmilch and his followers for their persecution of the Jews. Imperial soldiers escorted the Jews back into Frankfurt. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 31, 1921: The Tulsa Race Riot. From May 31 through June 1, deputized whites (i.e., racist vigilantes) killed more than 300 African Americans in the worst race riot in U.S. history. The violence began in response to a false report in the Tulsa Tribune accusing a black man of attacking a white girl in an elevator. The headline made the front page. However, there was an accompanying editorial that called for a lynching. White Tulsans went to the African American community of Greenwood (the Black Wall Street) and started shooting black people. They looted and burned 40 square blocks, destroying over 1,400 African American homes, hospitals, schools, and churches. Ten thousand became homeless and had to spend the winter of 1921 living in tents. </p><p>Many African American residents fought back, including veterans of World War One. This attempt at self-preservation prompted the deputized whites and National Guardsmen to arrest 6,000 black residents. Furthermore, they bombarded the community from the air in what was likely the first aerial bombardment of mainland U.S. residents. At least a dozen planes, some carrying police, circled the community and dropped burning balls of turpentine. They also shot at residents from the air. Many of the whites were members of the Klan, such as W. Tate Brady, who had also participated in the tarring and feathering of members of the Industrial Workers of the World in 1917. </p><p>Just a few months later, the government again bombarded civilians from the air, during the Battle of Blair Mountain, when 15,000 coal miners battled 3,000 cops, private cops and vigilantes, in the largest insurrection since the Civil War. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History April 19, 1903: The Kishinev pogrom occurred in Bessarabia. At the time, Bessarabia was part of the Russian Empire. Today it is part of Moldova. During the pogrom, local Christians killed 49 Jews, raped many Jewish women and destroyed over 1500 homes. The incident led Zionist founder, Theodor Herzl, to propose the Uganda Scheme for resettlement of the Jews in east Africa. The British government supported the plan, as it would help further their interests and imperialism in Africa, and help limit the influx of Jewish refugees into Britain from eastern Europe. Herzl had also proposed creating a Jewish homeland in Cyprus. Of course, what he really desired was a Jewish homeland in Palestine, but the Kishinev pogrom caused him to feel a greater urgency to create any kind of homeland as quickly as possible, and east Africa was what was being offered. The proposal nearly fractured the Zionist movement, with many delegates walking out, and other expressing a loss of faith in Herzl’s leadership. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 25, 1919: Cossack troops murdered 4,000 Jews in the Tetiev pogrom in Ukraine, two-thirds of the Jewish population. They tossed infants into the air and dashed their bodies on the pavement and burned the Jewish quarter to the ground. The Tetiev pogrom would become the prototype of mass murder during the Holocaust. During the Russian Civil War, from 1918 to 1921, there were 1,236 violent attacks against Jews in 524 Ukrainian towns. 30,000-60,000 died in these pogroms. What is the most pathetic, craven, cowardly, selfish, irresponsible, and openly collaborationist (with fascists) thing you could possibly do? The episode covered a wide range of grievances Kirk and other far-right activists have with Newsom, touching on topics from Black Lives Matter to COVID policies. However, the issue of transgender rights surfaced repeatedly. At one point, Newsom stated he was "completely aligned" with Kirk on transgender participation in sports. He also appeared to express agreement with restrictions on medical care for incarcerated transgender people and limits on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth."</p><p>Yes, you read that correctly; the Dem Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, celebrated the birth of his new podcast by inviting Charlie fucking Kirk on to his show and stridently agreeing with him about various aspects of the GOP's fascist war on trans rights and by extension, their efforts to threaten the existence of trans people entirely. I'm sure some Dem apologists reading this are already calling me an alarmist, but before I explain why you can't have just "a little" fascist persecution of trans people, I'd like to make something abundantly clear. Charlie Kirk is a professional fascist propagandist, who is actively employed in the task of creating ideological arguments to support, and popular support for, a real as fuck pogrom against trans people. That's what he is, that's what he does for a living:</p><p>"Newsom’s invitation and capitulation to Charlie Kirk on his podcast will alarm LGBTQ+ advocates. Kirk has a well-documented history of extremist rhetoric and hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community. In a 2023 video, he stated, “These people are sick… I blame the decline of American men. Someone should have just ‘took care of it’ the way we used to take care of things in the 1950s and 60s, but as you have testosterone rates going down and men acting like women, well…”—seemingly advocating for violence against transgender people. Kirk has also repeatedly used the slur "tr*nny" and has encouraged its normalization. He once called transgender people “a throbbing middle finger to god.” In the last election cycle, TPUSA’s PAC, which he leads, spent millions on anti-transgender ads, making his presence on Newsom’s platform all the more striking."</p><p>Given that, hosting Charlie Kirk on your podcast in the first place is a profoundly craven and dangerous act of fascist collaboration. Enough so that even if Newsom and Kirk were chatting about the weather, he should still be forced to resign immediately from both the party and the governorship. Of course, they weren't just talking about the weather; Governor Newsom, who btw has one of the safest seats in all of US government and thus has no electoral need to pander to, again, fascists who want to criminalize and ultimately end the existence of trans people, invited Charlie on his podcast to spew transphobic propaganda in service of an active fascist pogrom targeting trans people and in particular young trans women; and then agreed with him. There is no wiggle room or nuance to be had here, Newsom just helped the fascists make trans people less safe in America and his actions absolutely *will* have a body count associated with them down the line. This isn't about women's sports, or gender care in carceral settings because those are just the wedge arguments the fascists are using to criminalize trans existence; what Newsom is doing here is agreeing in principle that trans people are a danger to women/girls, and that their medical rights should be subject to legislation - all that's left to argue about at that point is to what degree trans people aren't people and thus don't have the same rights as other Americans.</p><p>Folks, this isn't some backwater school board rep straying off script; Newsom is probably one of the five most powerful people in the entire Democratic Party and clearly has designs on the presidential nomination for the 2028 US election.
