Swede’s PhotographsDuskThis is a photograph of treetops at dusk. The trees are little more than silhouettes, but their edges blaze as if lit by fire. A bolt of light—like lightning or molten dusk—streaks across the frame from right to left, erupting and re-erupting in the taller, sparser trees on the left. Above it all, the sky smolders in shades of orangish black, thick with dusk’s residue.The effect wasn’t exactly planned. I was fiddling with the light parameters—sliding levers, nudging contrast—and this emerged. It felt like a sovereign accident, so I kept it. Why not.The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Swede’s PhotographsThrough the Canopy This morning, the usual backyard birds made their rounds—cardinals, chickadees, and the occasional blue jay. At one point, I was sure I heard a woodpecker nearby and kept craning my neck to peer up into the old oak. But the tapping turned out to be my chair, issuing a kind of cackling protest every time I shifted. Swede’s PhotographsGood morning. 🌨️❄️☃️6 October 2025Storm Door DispatchesI’m about to drink a cup of coffee, then head out for a walk—just me and Charlie McGee.Coffee and quiet in the morning: one of life’s remaining pleasures. I drink mine black and have noticed that as it cools, a bitter taste creeps in. Or maybe I should say a bitterer taste. I know the tricks to tame the bitterness, but I rarely take the time to use them. So it ends up being just plain black coffee. Lately, I’ve turned to dark roast—it’s a little smoother than medium, me thinks.I’m not sure where Charlie is at this exact moment, but my guess is he’s stationed at the back storm door, keeping watch over the yard for the bad squirrels. They raid my birdfeeders, and one of Charlie’s self-appointed duties is to chase them off. It’s a task he takes on with extreme vigor.The thing is, the squirrels know the storm door is a barrier. They know Charlie can’t get out unless I let him. So they taunt him—turning the backyard into their playground while he watches, pacing and growling. That is, until I show up and open the door. Then—uh oh—squirrels and birds scatter toward the fence and the forest. It’s routine, but it never gets old.I said squirrels and birds, but truth be told, Charlie tolerates the birds. He even watches them with me when we’re out back. Probably nothing—I’m still half asleep. But you have to admit, it has rhythm. It sounds like I said something profound, when really, it’s just gibberish. My fingers are moving, and my mind is following.Maybe it’s subconscious. Maybe that line—“Somedays are Sundays and others are Mondays”—is meant to lead us somewhere. Where could that be? Or perhaps... when? Maybe... just maybe... Tuesdays. What do you think? Could it be Tuesdays?Perhaps my hands have developed minds of their own. Like in that old black-and-white horror movie with Peter Lorre—The Beast with Five Fingers—where a detached hand scuttles about, strangling people. Swede’s PhotographsEchoes Beneath ThemHere’s a shot of two hooded mergansers (Lophodytes cucullatus) lifting off from a pond in Albany, Georgia. It’s not my strongest capture of them, but it does offer a glimpse of flight and reflection—two elements I’ve been chasing with these birds. So far, I haven’t been fully satisfied with the results; I’ve had to photograph them from a distance, which limits the detail I’m after. Swede’s PhotographsGood morning. 🍊🍊🍊3 October 2025I had a plumber come in yesterday to unstop our kitchen sink. He was a nice enough young man and did a good job, but the cost to get him to snake out the drain gave me sticker shock. It was nearly twice what it was the last time I called them. I imagined being told in an Eastern European accent "the price is the price." The plumbing company is the one I normally call, but the next time I need the sink unplugged I might consider calling somebody else, or not I'll have to wait and see how I feel at the time. We're supposed to walk this morning but I'm again getting a late start. We may just do a few laps around the property today. One lap is roughly a quarter mile so I can get a little exercise in that way and Charlie stays off the leash when we stay here so he can run and jump or just get inquisitive about all of the surrounding scents. I'll need to dig out my waterproof hiking shoes; there is dew in the morning. After that, I may tend to the bird feeders, because they don't tend to themselves. I get to feeling a little bad when I look out and there are birds just hanging around empty feeders while staring at the backdoor.
