btuftin@bookwyrm.social On the Calculation of Volume (Book I) - I finished this book and ... I can hardly say anything about it that wouldn't be a spoiler. It's a long slow trip despite being less than 200 pages. I'll eventually read the next volume, but there's seven or eight of them and if there isn't a shift of some kind early in book two I'm going to decide this just isn't for me. #books #reading

Now, I see a few tech sites who post an occasional review and/or an annual 'best eReaders for [year]', which inevitably tells us that the best choice is either a big A walled-garden trap, or a slightly less evil Kobo
Occasionally, they'll throw in a boox, just to shake things up a little
And here's the thing: for the boox, the biggest con is no store and no DRM compatibility; because that is a good thing?
The con for the Kobo is always, 'fewer books available in the store [compared to Amazon]'
I am not in the demographics for these articles. I know how to get around DRM. I prefer epub, physical buttons, and portability
I have liked and used the Pocketbook app in my android tablets for like a decade, and when I deccided to go dedicated (for the sake of my eyes if nothing else, 
) I went with the Touch HD 3
Unfortunately, that one died an ignominious death by being in my pocket at the wrong time and I all but broke it in half while working

I treated myself to a new ereader: a Pocketbook Verse Pro
I did consider getting the color version for just a little more (funny enough, it's now $5 cheaper 
) but I decided that the monochrome would be better for me at this time: I don't read a lot of comics, and battery life is better without the additional color circuitry
This is a 6" device. Even with a case, its small enough to fit in my cargo pants pocket, unlike the Likebook P78 which is now semi-retired (its glass is broken and the battery is starting to fade)
Also, I prefer the Pocketbook interface and physical keys. The Likebook is slow to boot, and there is a quirk where it will drop the second part of a hyphenated word if it occurs at the end of page
Also images will overlay text, which can sometimes be overcome by extreme font resizing... sometimes
