Cut the Carve-Out

In the hallowed halls of British justice, a familiar narrative recently played out: a clash between the government's sovereign power in foreign affairs and its obligations under international law. The High Court’s approach to Al-Haq’s challenge to the UK's continued export of F-35 fighter jet components to Israel, is a

:boost_ok: iNat update 2: I decided to stir the pot a little. There's a lot of "just simmer down and give them time" going on...'cause I guess six weeks of silence isn't enough. There's also a lot of "this is just repetitive" because of course we all still have the same questions because it's been six weeks with no answers.

So here is a fresh thought: I don’t know how grants you all write work, but the ones I write (not just scientific ones, but also for NPOs of various kinds) require a lot of detail about the project, from budget to methods and more…so there is “a plan” somewhere, there had to be, for the grant to even be written in the first place, long before it was selected and awarded and then announced in early June.

I would be really curious to read the original grant proposal. :blobcatcoffee: (emoji of a cat sipping from a mug of coffee or tea)

Journalists Starving in Gaza. ‘“As these journalists face starvation, displacement & constant threat of attack, the int’l community risks losing its last independent source of #reporting from inside #Gaza…That’s not just a loss of information—it’s a collapse in transparency, a blow to advocacy for civilians & a dangerous opening for impunity. Silencing journalists under these conditions is not simply a media freedom issue—it’s a crisis of global #accountability.” | CJR cjr.org/news/journalists-starv

We said we’d be pursuing answers — now we are.

Vox Political has officially written to Parliament and submitted a Freedom of Information request over the DWP’s refusal to explain why death-related benefit data was released after MPs voted to cut Universal Credit.

This matters. And we’re not letting it drop.

*I was going to post this on #SocialBC but 500 characters limit is insufficient for most of my posts.*

Most people are blinded by celebrities & politicians to the point most folks don't hold those shitty folks up to same decency standards as we do for our own community neighbours.

I've seen it happen in my personal, professional & community volunteer arenas. I'm not into pedestals for anything but statues. For humans, in public service government roles - the higher up you are, the MORE responsible & accountable your entire department SHOULD be. If you're against government #transparency & #accountability - you are, in fact, anti democratic.

“They don’t want any #accountability,” said Representative Rosa DeLauro, the Connecticut Democrat who leads her party on the chamber’s Appropriations Committee. “They’re annoyed the #GAO found the White House is stealing funds from taxpayers. That is the only plausible explanation for this.”

The #House bill would also block the #accountability office from suing the government to force the release of frozen funds, unless Dodaro & his successors obtain congressional support. That could make it harder for the office to conduct #oversight of #Trump, though #Senate #Republicans have not targeted the #GAO as part of their own appropriations bill for 2026. A spox for Valadao did not respond to a request for comment.

The #House measure, if passed, could force the #accountability office to reduce its staff by at least 2,200 people, acc/to an estimate that the #GAO furnished to lawmakers in June. The office warned that the cut would leave it unable to do work sought by both parties to uncover federal waste.

“It would have, if that were to happen, grave & pervasive effects on our services to #Congress,” Dodaro said in an interview.

Under existing #law, the #accountability office may sue to force a president to release illegally withheld funds. In a sign of the seriousness surrounding #Trump’s recent spending moves, the #GAO said in May it would retain outside counsel that could assist in #litigation, acc/to correspondence viewed by NYT. Trump’s top aides have previously said the office is prohibited by the #Constitution from challenging the president in this way [wrong].
