Klassischerweise ist es weibliche Reproduktionsarbeit, die das Leben nicht nur gebiert, sondern auch tagein, tagaus wieder herstellt. Die Kapitalistin kostet die Zeit, in der im Privathaushalt Socken gewaschen, Mäuler gestopft und Tränen abgewischt werden, nichts. Sie bezahlt nur die Zeit, die der erwachsene, halbwegs gefasste und ausgeruhte Mensch am Arbeitsplatz verbringt. Das ist sehr praktisch für die Kapitalistin - es wäre anderenfalls deutlich schwerer, profitabel zu produzieren. Dass diese Dienste umsonst sind, verdankt sich patriarchalen Verhältnissen. Historisch war die weibliche Reproduktionsfähigkeit fiktives Eigentum der Ehemänner. Das verschleiert ihren Charakter als Arbeit zum Teil bis heute. Die Sorgetätigkeiten wurden wie Eigenschaften, nicht wie Leistungen der Frauen betrachtet.
