"Prior to American and Mexican control, much of the region that would come to be known as the borderlands had been inhabited for thousands of years by various #NativeAmerican peoples such as the #TohonoOodham, the #Cocopah, and many others. Following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 and the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, the U.S.-Mexico border cut right through these and other tribal homelands. The governments of both countries relegated the once wide-ranging tribes to much smaller pieces of land along the border, where many of these groups still reside.These tribes value the land along the border for the historical and cultural connections they have in this region."

A long-held goal of western state Republicans (remember James Watt?) has been to #privatize #publiclands (mostly federal lands) as a favor to #oil #gas #mining #ranching interests. Senator Mike Lee (Troll - Utah) is peddling privatization as a way to address housing shortages and spur rural development - of second homes, I suppose.
