Astronomy Picture of the Day<p>APOD from 2025-08-04</p><p>Blue Arcs Toward Andromeda</p><p>Amateur astronomers discovered blue arcs, SDSO 1, near Andromeda in 2022. Initially mysterious, over 550 hours of study revealed they're a new class of planetary <a href="https://mastodon.bot/tags/nebula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nebula</span></a> within our <a href="https://mastodon.bot/tags/galaxy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>galaxy</span></a>, not intergalactic. ESO<p>A team of astronomers have used ALMA to observe the supergiant star DFK 52, and found a cloud of ejected material 1.4 light-years across!<br>⁠<br>DFK 52 is around 10-15 times more massive than the Sun.
